This is a Buddhist temple, built in 824 A.D. by King Indera belonging to the Cailendra dynasty. Three big statues are present at the interior part the temple, which are Cakyamuni Statue with dharma cakra mudra (turning the wheel of dharma’s hand pose), Awalokiteswara and Maitreya considered being the savior of human beings in the future. Candi Mendut (Mendut Temple) is used by Buddhists to celebrate the Waisak day in a grand manner on every full moon day and the devotees from Indonesia and other parts of the world attend this ceremony.

Its architecture has the shape of a square. The roof has stupas on it. The other attraction includes the klewer market it is an old market place which sells all kinds of fabrics. Some of the other traditional fabrics include lurik (hand-woven striped cotton cloth) and tenun ikat. There are hundreds of shops present here.
